Step4
Spread your legs while unclothed and use a long-handled mirror to look at your vaginal opening. Using your other hand, spread the inner and outer lips of your vagina. Look for any unusual spots, growth or discharge. Normal vaginal discharge varies from a clear to opaque color and changes in thickness during different times of the month.
Step5
Insert a speculum, if you have one, after lubricating it with jelly or water. Gently pinch the handles together to open the speculum.
Step6
View your cervix using the long-handled mirror—your cervix should look like a small doughnut. Shine the flashlight into the mirror, if you need one, and the light should reflect off the mirror into your vagina.
Step7
Note how your cervix looks. It could be smooth and pink, or could have red spots or blemishes. Don’t worry unless it looks unusual. If in doubt, ask your doctor.
Step8
Become familiar with your vagina by performing a vaginal self exam often. When you have a doctor’s checkup, ask the doctor if you can have a look to help familiarize yourself with what is and isn’t normal for you.
